With 99% accuracy, researchers claim the canines can detect lung cancer in people’s breath.

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

In the small world of people who train dogs to sniff cancer, a little-known Northern California clinic has made a big claim: that it has trained five dogs — three Labradors and two Portuguese water dogs — to detect lung cancer in the breath of cancer sufferers with 99 percent accuracy.

The study, published last year in the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, was based on well-established concepts. It has been known since the 1980s that tumors exude tiny amounts of alkanes and benzene derivatives not found in healthy tissue. Other researchers have shown that dogs, whose noses can pick up odors in the low parts-per-billion range, can be trained to detect skin cancers or react differently to dried urine from healthy people and those with bladder cancer, but never with such remarkable consistency.

Running with dogs - dog sledding tours in New England

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

MAIDSTONE, Vt. - Here’s the advice I get before I’m about to climb onto a sled tied to eight jumping, yipping dogs.
“We have three rules of dog sledding,” says my guide, Tom Bartlett.
“What are they?” I ask.
“Don’t let go, don’t let go, don’t ever let go” he says, breaking into a wheezy laugh.
I have to ask. “What happens if I let go?”
“You walk, the dogs run away,” he answers, laughing some more.

Maybe the humor is meant to be relaxing. It’s four miles to our first stop, Bartlett’s camp in Maidstone State Park, and though I’m excited to try dog sledding, I’m also anxious about a few things - falling off the sled and losing control being the top two.

Website launches puppy videos

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

Puppy videos are now available on PetConnectOnline.com for select puppies for sale.

“Videos give the pet seeker a glimpse of the puppy’s personality that a regular photograph doesn’t reveal,” said the PetConnect owner.

PetConnect may be the only online puppy website that offers videos of puppies for sale.

“We’re unaware of any other website that provides movies of puppies.”

Puppy videos pop up in a separate window in the expanded puppy information view. Videos last 15 to 60 seconds and operate on QuickTime software, which can be downloaded free from the Internet.

“We’re still in the experimental stage, but we plan to offer videos for most of the puppies for sale on our website.”

Regular photos will remain a part of each puppy’s listing incase pet seekers are not able to access the video.

About PetConnectOnline.com…

Ranked #3 on the Yahoo search engine, PetConnectOnline.com lists puppies for sale from selected breeders within a geographical range of their main office.

Each puppy’s listing provides information about the sire and dam, weights of puppy and parents, current dog food, photos, and health information.

Puppies are vet checked prior to being listed on the internet by a licensed veterinarian. The vet check includes the puppies’ heart, eyes, ears, knees, correct bite, and overall health.

PetConnect is owned and operated as a family business in the Midwest. The owners have over 30 years experience in the pet industry as well as expertise in marketing, internet sales, and website operations.

The owners also raise a select number of champion-line/European shih tzus.

Most puppies’ photographs are taken at the PetConnect office; a few breeders supply their own photos. Puppies remain with their breeders, where they are cared for, nurtured, and socialized until time to be transported to their new owners.

PetConnect, which was launched on July 15, 2005, operates on a commission basis and is not a brokerage.
